The next day my uncle hadnât returned. I hadnât seen him since the day before, when heâd left and gave me the message to give to my auntie Chris. Actually, having him gone for most of the day was fine. She stayed strong and stopped crying. Even though we werenât out and about spending money, we still had a good time with her. We baked chocolate chip cookies and popped popcorn.
I asked my aunt if I could call my friend. I was so happy she had a calling plan where long-distance calls were cheap. She told me she had some kind of flat rate, which meant it didnât matter how long I talked or where I called in the United States; her bill was going to be the same. I had to make sure my talking wouldnât make her spend money on me unnecessarily.
My time with my aunt had been so bumpy that I needed to hear from my girlfriends. I just knew Layah and Riana were having the time of their lives, and just hearing a little bit about their fun would probably cheer me up. I was excited that this summer was a good one. I had gotten a couple of letters here and there from them before I came down to North Carolina. They put telephone numbers on all of them. It was good to get their postcards. It was good to know they missed me. Now we could chitchat. Hopefully they would be home.
Ten minutes later, I was all smiles when I successfully connected the three of us on three-way. But my smile quickly turned to a frown as I learned my buddies had problems going on as well.
Layah said, âNope, my summer is not going that well either. You guys, Iâm so glad to talk to yâall. I just found out the worst news ever.â
I braced myself. What was my tough friend going to tell me? She was with her grandmother in Mississippi. Things should be fine.
âWhat, what?â I yelled, unable to wait.
âWhatâs going on?â Riana asked anxiously.
âGuys, you gotta pray for my grandmother. I just found out that sheâs got breast cancer.â
I had heard of breast cancer, but I really didnât know what it was. I was too embarrassed to tell my friend that I didnât know. Plus, I didnât want to ask too many questions. I felt if she wanted to go into more details, she would on her own. So basically I just listened.
âMy dad knew before I got up here; thatâs why he wanted me to spend this summer with her. Sheâs gotta have an operation and some radiation stuff. They say that with the cancer she has, she could get really sick. Itâs pretty bad,â Layah uttered in a sad tone.
âYour grandmotherâs gonna be okay,â I chimed in to cheer up my friend. âLetâs all pray for her now.â
We took a few minutes and talked to God about her grandmother. I felt bad for my friend. If anything like that was to happen to one of my grandmothers, I didnât know what Iâd do.
